Great Plains Chapter AU High School Senior Scholarship Essay Competition
The Great Plains Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State is offering a cash scholarship essay competition to high school seniors in the South Central Kansas area. The Chapter will award one $350 scholarship to the winning essay and one $150 scholarship as an honorable mention. College-bound high school seniors are asked in their essays to “Describe why church state separation is vital to the religious liberty of all Americans.” The use of personal examples to illustrate the importance of separation of church and state is encouraged.
High school seniors in south central Kansas area districts who are college-bound in fall 2012 are eligible. Include your high school’s name, city, state and date of graduation.
Essays should be 500 to 750 words. (Note other requirements at the end of this article.) Deadline: February 28th, 2012. Winners will be announced in March, 2012.
All essays should be typed, double-spaced, standard margins and stapled. The word count must be included. Put your name and essay title on each page. Entrants choose their own title and include a one-paragraph biography. The bio should include name, age, birth date, hometown, school, major or intended major, and interests. Do not include a resumé. Provide address, phone numbers and e-mail address for notification. Winners may be asked to send verification of student enrollment. Essay must be submitted both by mail and e-mail by deadlines. Students will be disqualified if they do not follow instructions.
By entering contest, students agree to permit winning essays to be printed in full or in part on the Great Plains AU website along with the author’s name. Winners agree to provide a photograph suitable for reproduction with their essay. Eligible non-winning essays may be awarded a student membership to Great Plains Chapter Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
